Sashiko - Jujizashi

Continuing on in the Hitomezashi stitch group, the Jujuzashi stitch is the next evolution from the Yokogushi stitch. Adding to the Horizontal rows in Yokogushi, Jujuzashi simple crosses each horizontal stitch.

Jujuzashi means ‘10 cross stitch’, and the crossing of the lines resembles the kanji character for 10. By sewing over the weft and warp of the fabric, the textile is strengthened and is a wonderful way to decoratively mend clothing. The pattern symbolizes prosperity as it is ever expanding.

Even though the pattern itself is a simple running stitch, you can add more interest with the threads you decide to use. I counted my horizontal grid and divided the area into 3 sections, alternating colors in each section from white, to black, and back to white. On the vertical grid I used black and gold thread, but alternated the colors into 3 vertical sections and also respected the horizontal sections which created 9 areas of color changes. This gave an interesting depth to the pattern over using just one or 2 colors.

The fabric used is an iron shifted Cochineal on the front side, and one of my digitally printed patterns (Hamaka in color San Juan) on the other side. I was curious to see the stitching on a more complex textile, and although the backside is very busy, I think it’s interesting and a good use of an alternative textile.
