Itajime

Geometry, pressure, and the poetry of repetition

Itajime Shibori creates pattern through folding and compression. Layers of cloth are folded into geometric forms and clamped between shaped blocks before entering the dye vat. The result is a striking interplay of symmetry, color, and negative space. I am drawn to Itajime for its ability to transform simple folds into complex visual rhythms, where mathematics and handcraft meet on the surface of cloth.
