Soft Lines in Color: Shibori & Natural Dye
About the Workshop
An exploration of simple Shibori resist and the gentle hues of Cochineal or Logwood.
In this hands-on workshop, we work with stitched Shibori techniques and immersion dyeing using natural color. This class is designed for beginners and for anyone who enjoys working with quiet, tactile processes.
You’ll begin by learning a few simple resist structures—small running stitches, guided folds, or a stitched circle—each one accessible and easy to complete within our workshop time. We’ll work on prepared linen squares, using thread to gather and shape the cloth before dyeing.
Once your pieces are stitched and bound, we move to the dye pots: Cochineal for soft roses and vivid berry tones, or Logwood for violets and smoky purples. Each dye has its own character; both offer warmth, depth, and a sense of connection to material. After immersion, we reveal the patterns slowly: unpicking the threads, opening the cloth, and seeing form emerge from color.
All materials are provided, including pre-scoured and pre-mordanted linen, tools, thread, and access to the dye baths. You will leave with 2–3 finished natural-dyed Shibori pieces and the confidence to continue experimenting at home.
This class is ideal for beginners, slow-makers, and anyone curious about natural color and pattern. No sewing or dyeing experience is required—just an interest in working with your hands and exploring color in a thoughtful way.
