About the Workshop

Step into the world of indigo and discover the beauty of resist and Shibori dyeing. In this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll explore simple techniques of folding, binding, clamping, and stitching to create striking patterns on cloth. Using a prepared natural indigo vat, we’ll dip our fabrics and watch as they emerge in shades of luminous blue.

No experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to play with cloth, thread, and color. Each participant will leave with a collection of indigo-dyed samples (and an optional silk scarf) that carry both the marks of tradition and your own hand.

✨ Perfect for artists, makers, and anyone interested in sustainable, slow craft.

What You’ll Learn

  • Brief history & magic of indigo dyeing

  • How an indigo vat works (demonstration with a pre-prepared vat)

  • Hands-on practice with Shibori and resist techniques:

    • Shibori Stitching (Pick from a selection of techniques to explore)

    • Bound resist (marbles, string, elastic bands)

    • Clamped resist (Itajime) with wood/plexi shapes

    • Simple stitched resist (Ori-Nui) for waves & lines

What You’ll Make

  • 2-4 hand-dyed cotton samples (perfect for quilting, patchwork, or framing)

Materials Provided

  • 2 to 4 cotton and/or linen squares (12” x 12”).

    • Additional sized pieces available as options

  • Materials for creating resists during the workshop

  • Optional upgrade: a pre bound silk scarf ready to dip and take home as a wearable piece of art.
