About the Workshop
Sashiko is a centuries-old Japanese stitching practice rooted in repair, resilience, and the quiet beauty of repeated lines. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the foundations of Sashiko — from marking simple geometric patterns to learning the traditional running-stitch technique that moves rhythmically through cloth.
Using natural fabrics and high-quality Sashiko threads, you’ll create a small stitched sampler or begin a visible-mending piece that reflects both tradition and your own hand. No sewing experience is needed — just a willingness to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the meditative nature of needle and thread.
You’ll leave with a finished (or nearly finished) stitched piece, the tools to continue at home, and a deeper appreciation for Sashiko as both craft and quiet practice.
What You’ll Learn
You will be guided through the process of making your own Sashiko coaster using natural dyed fabrics from the Breuwen collection.
A history on the origins of Sashiko and information about the patterns used and their cultural significance.
Techniques that you can use in your own home or studio practice.
What You’ll Make
Mini-Hana Fukin. Hana Fukin translates to Flower Cloth in Japanese. These are typically made at a large size and used as decorative placements, food coverings, gift wrapping, table runners, etc. Because of the time Sashiko takes to complete a pattern, I've scaled the size down so you have the opportunity to create a more complex piece within the workshop time. The fabric square is made from naturally dyed fabric that I make in my own studio, and backed with beautiful textile pieces that I bring back from my trips to Japan.
I teach Sashiko techniques that are easy for beginning level learning. I have a series of patterns that we build on, starting with a straight stitch technique that can then be added on to create other patterns. I also provide a guide for you to take home to continue building on the patterns. Depending on how quick of a sewer you are, you might be able to move through the 3 step process to finish the more complex pattern, but if not I can send you home with extra thread to finish your work.
During the class I go over different techniques and tools that can be used for Sashiko. I also have kits for sale that I'll have available at the workshop with items like templates, Sashiko Thimbles (handmade in my studio), needles, and fabric pieces to make additional mini-hana fukin.
